Education

Ph.D. Biological Sciences, University of California at Berkeley M.S. Biological Sciences, University of California at Berkeley B.S. Biological Sciences, Rochester Institute of Technology I hold a Ph.D. in the Biological Sciences from the U.S. News & World Report’s #1 ranked public university, the University of California at Berkeley, and a B.S. from the Rochester Institute of Technology in a related field. One of UC Berkeley’s strongest features is their commitment to educating students across the full breadth of our nation’s diversity without sacrificing excellence; I believe in their mission and strive to carry this torch forward through my teaching endeavors.

Experience

Experience: In college I served as a tutor in general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics. In graduate school I led concurrent sections of general biology and microbiology for undergraduates, and designed and gave workshops to middle school students through an after-school program. I have tutored students in computer programming (Basic, Perl, Python, R languages). I have also supported community learning opportunities in the capital region as a volunteer at events such as the HVCC-sponsored ‘Girls in STEM’ workshop. Teaching Style: I attempt to channel my own enthusiasm into well-organized, clear, fascinating, and factually correct presentations. When pertinent I relate material to real-world problem solving, and incorporate analogies to make concepts tangible and memorable. Visuals, demonstrations, examples, and critical thinking problems are also tools I have found useful both as a student and as a teacher. My passion and drive to ensure student success often inspires me to generate additional practice problems and reading assignments after office hours, which I always make available to students free of charge.

Hobbies

Biography: Childhood - My parents were my first teachers. Both my parents have forged careers as educators within public schools and as classical musicians, and I have been fortunate to inherit their characteristic patience, good nature, and self-discipline. Musical appreciation began in the womb, and from an early age on I began to develop my abilities as a classical pianist and multi-instrumentalist. My father also farmed seasonally, and through my early participation I became enamored with plants and the people who cultivated them. When not farming, I was a three-season athlete (Cross-country running, Ice Hockey, Track&Field). I was also an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Though I have been a well-rounded student, math, science, and technical writing are notable disciplines from my career path.
