SUNY at Albany - Bachelors, English/Education , SUNY at Albany - Current Grad Student, Latin American Literature
Experience
I was born in Honduras. When I moved to the US at 13, I didn't speak English, but I was determined to become fluent in it. It took me two years. I attended college to earn my bachelor's in English with a minor in education. I earned my teaching certificate, becoming certified as an English and Spanish instructor. I spent five years at a public school and another four at a private institution. While teaching in classrooms, I served as a private tutor after school and during the summer. I worked with young children and professional adults. I tutor primarily in the Spanish language, though I also teach ESL/ELL and English. As a native Spanish-speaker, I am well qualified to tutor students in the language, literature, and culture. I can help a student become confident in their conversational Spanish skills, whether they have trouble with grammar or pronunciation. As a tutor, I believe it is important that each session be fun and relevant. I often use newspapers, menus, and other forms of media in the target language to allow my students the chance to practice. Hands on activities can foster a deeper understanding of the language. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy coffee and soccer.
